Tricoat Directions

Tricoat paint is a three-layer system. It uses a basecoat for the main color, a thin midcoat that adds depth, and a clearcoat for shine and protection.

Tricoat colors are harder to match than regular touch up paint because the midcoat changes the final look. Too little midcoat and the color may look wrong. Too much and it may look too dark or too rich. Before working on your vehicle, test the process on a scrap piece of metal or plastic.

Best Results

Spraying usually gives the best result with tricoat paint. If you use a brush or pen, apply very thin coats and work carefully.

Before You Start

Make sure the repair area is smooth before adding the next layer. Smooth primer and basecoat layers are important when applying tricoat paint. Once the midcoat is added, it is much harder to fix roughness underneath.

How to Apply Tricoat Paint

1. Apply the basecoat

Apply the basecoat first. This is the main color layer. Let it dry fully before moving to the next step.

2. Apply the midcoat

Apply the midcoat in very light coats. Build it slowly and check the color as you go. This is the hardest part of the repair, so practice first.

3. Apply the clearcoat

Once the midcoat has dried, apply the clearcoat. This adds gloss and protects the repair.

4. Polish the finish

After the clearcoat has dried for at least 3 days, polish the area with rubbing compound and a soft cloth to bring back shine.

Need a perfect match?

Tricoat paint can be tricky. For larger repairs or the best possible match, a professional body shop may be the better choice.
